Come with an Open Heart to the Elderly. Story of Ben from Germany

Lawyer Benjamin Grzymek from Germany joined our volunteer community in 2022 and has participated several times in delivering aid on his own minibus. Benjamin believes that older people make a significant contribution to the next generation with their experience and play a crucial role in the development of humanity. Therefore, it is our duty to support them. Read Benjamin’s story and his volunteering experience with Starenki below.

What motivates you to support older people, and why do you think it is important to help the elderly?

The circumstances of my childhood led me to live with my maternal grandparents for several years. They took me to kindergarten and the first two years of primary school. My grandfather taught me many things I should have learned from my father (or not), and my grandmother has been and remains one of the most important people in my life. Perhaps due to my experience, I enjoy being in the company of older people, and I have no problem caring for them, even if they are strangers to me.

Allowing older people to be part of society helps unlock their potential — experience, wisdom, and knowledge.

Share your impressions of delivering assistance to the elderly.

They all thanked for the help, but it was evident that they were genuinely grateful for the visit [of the volunteer]. I understand that most older people suffer from loneliness. Surprisingly, almost all women still take care of their appearance and homes. They change into different clothes for our visit, and some even put on makeup.

Why did you choose our foundation to help the elderly?

— I appreciate the personal, direct approach of the employees and volunteers of the “Elderly” Foundation. They genuinely care about the people they help.

What advice would you give to those who want to try volunteering for the first time?

Come with an open heart to the elderly and be ready to dedicate time and listen to them. It’s worth it.

With the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ben delivered over 40 tons of humanitarian aid during more than 20 trips to Ukraine. He even founded the charitable organization “Die Trommel,” which helps Ukrainians in need. We are happy that alongside his humanitarian efforts, Benjamin joined the Starenki team as a volunteer!
